When and Why Your Doctor May Change Your Due Date
Back to Your pregnancy and baby guide. All pregnant women in England are offered an ultrasound scan at around 8 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is called the dating scan. It’s used to see how far along in your pregnancy you are and check your baby’s development. Your midwife or doctor will book you a dating scan appointment.
It will usually take place at your local hospital ultrasound department.
The most accurate time for the due date calculation is between 8 and 11 weeks pregnant. This is because your baby is growing so quickly that there is a big.
Are you visiting our clinic for an early pregnancy scan? For the privacy of our ladies, we do not mix our firstScan sessions with ladies coming for scans such as gender or 4D. We have a range of packages to suit all ladies , including viability, dating, reassurance, previous miscarriage and IVF. At 6 weeks, baby is only around 4mm so is very small. Baby has doubled in size to 8mm by week 7, so you may leave us feeling more reassured than at 6 weeks, due to how clear we can see baby.
Because this is an early pregnancy scan, baby is very small. Internal scans offer much more accurate results and are offered to ladies under 10 weeks. You may decline an internal scan if you wish by just telling your sonographer. The scan will not hurt your baby. From the very early weeks of pregnancy, your baby is surrounded by fluid which protects them, so with either an abdominal or an internal probe, the probe will not touch your baby.
We recommend arriving at the clinic between 10 — 15 minutes before your appointment.
How accurate is my ‘due date’?
You can calculate your due date by subtracting three months from the first day of your last menstrual period LMP and then add a week. Use our pregnancy calculator. A pregnancy is based on being days long, which is 40 weeks more like 10 months not 9! Ultrasounds performed during the first
There are two types of pregnancies. Those that are planned and those that just happen. The pregnancies that are spontaneous will often make you wonder, when did all this happen? Apart from satiating your curiosity, it has other health-related implications. For instance, there are cases where doctors have unnecessarily induced labour because there is uncertainty about how old the foetus is. This can result in premature birth. Barring the incredibly meticulous, tracking the exact time of conception can be, at best, a guessing game.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.
This begins with an early ultrasound at around weeks’ gestation. On this ultrasound we will determine whether the pregnancy is in the correct location, in your.

How accurate is your baby’s due date? What to know about when you’ll go into labor
It is common to be given a single ‘estimated due date’ EDD which corresponds the point at which it is estimated that your pregnancy will have lasted 40 weeks. It may be more helpful to be prepared for you baby arrive some time after 37 weeks, and to focus on 42 weeks as the time by which you have a good chance of having given birth. Many women with longer pregnancies find that everyone is asking whether they have had their baby yet, and that health care workers start to suggest inducing labour.
For some women this will be the right decision, but it is important to know that this is your decision to make. Charting temperature, monitoring mucus, using ovulation test kits and knowing times when you could have conceived, or having conceived by IVF may mean you have your own information about when you became pregnant.

Some people even report the beginnings of a bump although this is quite rare.
Why Get An Early Pregnancy Scan?
An Early Pregnancy Scan sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP. We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks. If you are unsure of your dates or have irregular cycles we do ask that you have a scan two weeks after your first positive pregnancy test. Sometimes it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy in this case your scan is often called a viability scan and to calculate the date when your baby is due usually referred to as a dating scan.
It can also be performed to confirm the results of a pregnancy test or just to provide you with some reassurance that all is progressing as it should be.
ultrasound. Covers all aspects of sonography in pregnancy and the fetus. Just how accurate is ultrasound? I had a scan at 8 weeks and my doctor said the fetus is only 7 weeks, and it was because I had irregular menstrual cycles.
Dating a pregnancy accurately at the earliest possible time is important. In a normal pregnancy it does not matter what the dates are, but if anything should go wrong it becomes very important as to what treatments may be prescribed. Traditionally the last menstrual period has been used to date a pregnancy, but this may be highly inaccurate. A simple formula is to take the first day of the menstrual period, subtract three months and add one week.
For instance, if your period starts on the 5th April, then your estimated due date for delivery is the 12th January. The dating scan is an ultrasound scan that can be done as early as six weeks after the last period, but the dating scan will be most accurate when done between 8 and 12 weeks gestation. At this time, the fetus is a little larger and easier to measure. Even dating scans can be inaccurate for the due date, but they are never as inaccurate as using the menstrual period.
For instance a dating scan done at 6 weeks could get the date wrong five days either way. A scan at 12 weeks could get the date wrong seven days either way and a scan done at 20 weeks could get the date wrong up to ten days either way. I prefer to do the dating scan via the transvaginal approach at approximately 8 weeks gestation. This is normally done in the consulting room for a small out of pocket cost.
This cost is nowhere near the out of pocket cost if the scan were to be performed at a radiology practice.

Today’s obstetrician gynecologist is required to interpret and in many cases perform ultrasound scans in the first trimester. In fact, certification of residency programs in many countries requires documentation of adequate exposure to and training in the evaluation of first-trimester ultrasound. Failure to understand the limitations of diagnostic ultrasound or inadequate training of physicians in this technique can result in grave complications for the patient and liability for health-care providers.
The standard of care for performing routine ultrasound examination at 6—7 weeks varies from country to country. The disadvantages of performing this examination routinely are related to cost, errors in diagnosing ectopic pregnancies that in fact are intrauterine, increased training requirements for providers, and potential biologic hazards to the fetus that are presently unknown.
The potential benefits of a subsequent ultrasound examination at 12—14 weeks from the LMP include:. Similarly the standard of care for performing routine ultrasound at 12—14 weeks’ gestation from the LMP varies from country to country. The disadvantages are cost, decreased sensitivity for major anomalies compared to the 20 week exam, and marked increase in training requirements for providers. The role of the early anatomic survey, when free DNA screening for chromosomal anomalies is being utilized, remains to be determined.
Any health-care provider performing diagnostic ultrasound must understand the physics of diagnostic ultrasound and have thorough, supervised training.
